My last HbA1c was 6.3 and I am prescribed 500mg metformin twice a day.Nowadays I follow intermittent fasting of 18:6 or 19:5 most of the days. How will I adjust my medication? As I do not eat breakfast ,is it ok to take metformin after some black tea or coffee?I have no gastric issues with metformin.
Another question...For Maximum efficiency of metformin, should I take the tablet immediately following a meal or is it ok after 2 or 3 hours closer to bedtime. Please advise.

    Boss @HSD,
If the meal takes 30 mins to chow down and MF is not taken at the beg of the meal, wouldn't the BS spike up in those 30 mins?
But if MF is taken just before the 1st bite, wouldn't MF help lower that spike right from the beginning?
    Thanks.

Metformin also builds up a cumulative effect on your fasting blood sugar after you take it for a week. This effect is not dependent on when you take it. If you miss a dose you will probably see a small but immediate difference in your post meal blood sugars. But if your stop taking it for a week you will not only see that effect the day after you you stop it, you will also see a second notable increase in your fasting blood sugar and pre-meal blood sugar about a week later.

MF can be taken after or before food as it's absorption is not affected in fasting or with food.
Normally MF recommended after food because of gastric upset.
I always take MF before food (around 30 minutes), since many years. Since I don't have any gastric upset with MF.
There are combination of MF with SU drugs which Drs. recommend before food.
MF has 2 significant role - Delays carbs absorption and reduce IR.
MF also have positive effect on liver dump.
I suggest to take MF before or after BF / lunch and second dose at bed time or at dinner.

I take it 30 mins before,BF and just before dinner as reach home late and hence no time gap
I can tolerate metformin while some cannot .
It can cause gastric irritation and for some can cause loose motions in the initial phase and go away on repeated dosages

    Good discussion about Metformin.
Some of the blogs also says Metformin may be taken with meals. That means it may be after Ist bite or after ist bite five minutes within the meals completed.
But this usggestion is not good since we have at meals we may not take this tablet in meals plate either in home or outside. In outside it is difficult to open the tablets cover and washing hands in between meals. Offcourse some of the person may be preferred this it may not bad.
m As @arun kumar comment some of the Doctors ( Mostly 90 % or more ) prescribe combination of metformin with SU drug. So they prefer to take before 20 minutes of food.
Further one question clarifed by members if SU drug if taken after meals or after some time or at bed time any problems noticed.
